The telecom sector in India is still at war, even after almost a year since the launch of disruptor, Reliance Jio. Airtel, being the biggest incumbent player in the industry is probably the only company that is equipped to tackle the onslaught of offers from Jio.
The data-wars were not limited to the telecom industry; months after the launch of Reliance Jio, the company launched JioFiber. JioFiber specifically targeted the broadband market of India. Though it hasn't been launched commercially, it still introduced disruption in the broadband sector.
In response, Airtel launched broadband plans that sound too good to be true. The company is offering 1000GB of data with most of their high-end broadband plans. The plans were launched in May but are still keeping Airtel consumers from straying towards JioFiber.
According to Airtel, these are the best selling broadband plans. There are four plans (Rs 1099, Rs 1299, Rs 1499, Rs 1799) which can get you 1000 GB of bonus data, which will be valid till March 31, 2018. The lowest plan of Rs 899 will fetch the user 500 GB till March 31, 2018.
The offer cannot be combined with any other offer by Airtel and can only be availed by an online purchase. The offer is being provided by Airtel broadband to any customer who wishes to avail Airtel's DSL services after 12th June 2017.
In order for a new customer to avail the Offer, the eligible customer must visit the page www.airtel.in/broadband and select base plan, enter mobile number and address to raise request for new broadband connection or contact customer care to apply for subscription to Airtel Broadband services.
Upon subscription to one of the select plans under the present offers, and upon expiry of a period of 7 days following the date of activation of their new connection, a customer shall, subject to feasibility at the point of connection, be able to enjoy additional data, in addition to the base plan chosen by them, which comes with the same speed as per chosen base plan.
Airtel also clarified that the offer is only applicable on the base plan data quota and any data left unused from smartbytes, pre/post data packs or daily data packs will not be covered. Also, it cannot be clubbed with any other offer provided by the operator.
Users can also check the rolled over data by simply sending an SMS (DATA USE to 121) or on My Airtel App. The benefits under this offer are not transferable and no exchange or redemption for an equivalent cash amount or in any other form shall be allowed, Airtel further stated.
To maintain its position in the telecom sector after Reliance Jio's disruptive entry, Airtel has announced a slew of new offers with more data packs and other benefits. Last month, Airtel announced 1GB data per day of 84 days at Rs 399 for its prepaid customers. Along with the data, Airtel will also provide unlimited calls (both local and STD) on all networks.
Airtel reported its smallest profit in 18 quarters as a price war sparked by Jio weighed on earnings. Profit on a consolidated basis, which includes Bharti's Africa operations and its Indian satellite TV business among others, fell 75 per cent to Rs 367 crore ($57.01 million) in the three months to June 30, the company said in a statement.
Raj Pudipeddi, director of consumer business at Bharti Airtel, told ET that the company is eyeing more partnerships to create an ecosystem of offerings. "These partners could be device manufacturers, OTT players, could be ecommerce players or they could be service providers who pick up the phone from you. The whole ecosystem is going to be driven by what is important to the customer and stitching up proposition to it," Pudipeddi said.
Bharti Airtel already has partnerships with OTT players like Ditto TV, ErosNow, SonyLIV and Hooq for live TV and video on demand services. It is also working with a number of handset vendors on data bundling with new smartphones, having recently tied up Micromax to offer one year of free 4G data with Canvas 2 smartphone.
The telco is also considering three-way agreements with ecommerce players and handset vendors to offer attractive data plans when a person buys a handset online, according to another executive, who did not wish to be identified.
Pudipeddi’s remark comes at a time when Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Jio is increasingly using its content as the key differentiator, especially with its low-cost 4G feature phone, through which it aims to capture a bulk of the 2G users.
ET had reported on Tuesday that Bharti Airtel is also in talks with handset vendors for 4G feature phone bundling.
Bharti Airtel, which recently introduced data carry forward service for its postpaid base under ‘Project Next’, is now working on innovation for its prepaid base in the country.
"You must expect a drum beat of innovation from us for both postpaid and prepaid customers," he said.
Pudipeddi also said that the industry is moving towards bundled plans, as customers in India continue to use more data. "Our Project Next focuses on exactly that...data has become much more important to the Indian consumer. It is part of the Indian consumer habit change that we are all experiencing".
The executive said that Airtel is working on bringing transparency and simplicity in its services. "The customer need that actually comes right on the top is the simplicity they experience. Customer wants to have simplicity and transparency," he said.
Pudipeddi also said that the revamp of Bharti Airtel's retail stores will help it in customer acquisition.

Airtel Rings In 'Data Rollover Offer' To Counter Jio Disruption
Bharti Airtel postpaid users can now avail the "data rollover" feature from this month. Under the Airtel offer, the unused or leftover data will be added to the next month's cycle allowing users to get more benefits. "The unused 3G/4G data of a subscriber at the end of a particular bill cycle is rolled over and added to the data quota for the next bill cycle," Airtel said on its website. "A maximum of 200GB of 3G/4G data per subscriber can be accumulated under this offer," it added.Airtel also clarified that the offer is only applicable on the base plan data quota and any data left unused from smartbytes, pre/post data packs or daily data packs will not be covered. Bharti Airtel eyes new partnerships to counter Reliance Jio
Bharti Airtel, India's leading telecom company by users, is considering expanding its partnership with handset brands, over-the-top (OTT) players and tying up with ecommerce players in a bid to retain subscribers and counter newcomer Reliance Jio’s bouquet of offerings.Raj Pudipeddi, director of consumer business at Bharti Airtel, told ET that the company is eyeing more partnerships to create an ecosystem of offerings.
