Reliance Jio holds the maximum market share of 41.01% in the overall broadband internet (wired and wireless) as of June 30, followed by Airtel and Vodafone with 18.40% and 13.7% share respectively, as per Trai data.
While BSNL has the highest user base in the wired broadband internet services segment with 9.73 million subscribers, Jio leads in the wireless broadband category with 123.36 million users.
In the wired services segment, Bharti Airtel has 2.10 million users, Atria Convergence Technologies has 1.22 million users and, MTNL has 0.98million users. In the wireless broadband internet segment, Reliance Jio had 123.36 million users, Bharti Airtel had 53.25 million users, Vodafone had 41.13 million users and Idea Cellular had 26.37 million users.
According to the data, the private access service providers held 90.92%market share of the wireless subscribers whereas the PSUs BSNL and MTNL had a market share of only 9.08%. However, BSNL and MTNL held 69.36% of the wireline market share.
The report added that the wireless tele-density percentage in India increased from 91.74% at the end of May to 92.12% at the end of June.
According to analysts of S&P, “Jio, through heavy discounting, has managed to grab 10% of the country’s telco subscriber base in less than a year, but costly discounting practices cannot last forever.”
Going forward, S&P Global Ratings expects the telecom sector to consolidate with the top three telcos — the Idea-Vodafone combine, Bharti Airtel and Jio — eventually controlling 75-85% of industry revenue, but this, it said, could still be a year or two away.
